College World Series 2016: How to look like an expert

Baseball It’s OK if you’ve Googled “College World Series 2016” because you’re out of the loop; you’re not alone. We’re through the Regionals and Super Regionals and on to the College World Series starting this weekend in Omaha. College World Series 2016: Schedule | Odds If you haven’t really followed the action much, here are five things you can throw out there, courtesy of, as the four games (3 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday) get things rolling in Nebraska. 1. Note in advance that plate discipline, more than ever, is vital in the college ranks (firm your rep by dropping “ISO” in the conversation). Here are the eight CWS teams, ranked from best to worst in OBP with their walk totals (again, plate discipline) and isolated OBP (a.k.a. “ISO,” the difference between batting average and on-base percentage)School: OBP, BB, ISOTCU: .387, 305, .083Coastal Carolina: .385, 316, .085Texas Tech: .384, 336, .090Miami (Fla.): .383, 293, .083Arizona: .372, 295, .080Florida: .360, 296, .080Oklahoma State: .351, 268, .083UC Santa Barbara: .329, 217, .0672. When TCU and Texas Tech play, go with “This is going to take a while.”The Red Raiders and Horned Frogs met three times in Big 12 p

lay this season. Texas Tech won twice, but the two teams’ pitchers issued 30 walks — a whopping 10 per game. (Again, look at the above numbers.) The teams play at 3 p.m. ET Sunday; make your Sunday evening plans accordingly.3. Tell everyone UC Santa Barbara will come out hacking against Oklahoma State.Cowboys starter Thomas Hatch (8-2) has walked 30 in 119 1/3 innings (2.27 BB/9 IP) and the OSU staff is almost as good (4.01 BB/9 IP). The Gauchos, meanwhile, take the fewest pitches of any team in Omaha. Oklahoma State’s defense, then, will be a key in what looks to be a pretty quickly paced game (3 p.m. ET Saturday).4. Want to predict a first-weekend hero? Go with Miami’s Brandon LopezThe Hurricanes shortstop bats behind catcher Zack Collins, whose OBP is an eye-popping .538. notes that Lopez, who is hitting .385, has only has two homers but sprays the ball to the gaps — with Collins aboard more than half the time. Arizona should know this going into their game (8 p.m. ET Saturday).5. Finally, say this: “I can’t wait for this Coastal Carolina-Florida game.”It’s the good hitting vs. good pitching at 8 p.m. ET Sunday. Gators starter Logan Shore is 12-0 with a 2.24 ERA. The Chanticleers (knowledge drop: it’s a rooster) have a combination of power (40 HRs, most in the CWS field) and patience (again, look at the above OBP numbers). This is the most intriguing game of the opening weekend.
