Saquon Barkley injury update: Giants running back (ankle) ruled out of Week 5 vs. Vikings

  • NFL null null null null

Giants running back Saquon Barkley looked pretty good during limited practice work this week, but the team isn't ready to put him on the field as he's been ruled out of New York's Week 5 game against the Vikings.

Coach Pat Shurmur told reporters earlier this week that Barkley "felt good" in his recovery from an ankle sprain as he worked with New York's training staff. He held off on ruling him out for Sunday but made the decision Friday.

The running back reportedly told people he can beat his initial four- to eight-week timetable for recovery, according to NFL Network, which cited unidentified sources. The Giants staff, however, is taking a cautious approach in easing Barkley back into practice.

Barkley injured his ankle in the second quarter of the Giants' Week 3 win over the Buccaneers and had to be helped to the locker room.[......]

Colts vs. Chiefs odds, prediction, betting trends for 'Sunday Night Football'

The Chiefs (4-0) are only one of two undefeated AFC teams left, joining the Patriots. The Colts (2-2) have been hard to figure out this season, with losses to the Chargers and Raiders sandwiching wins over the Titans and Falcons.

Will the Colts go 0-3 against the AFC West to begin the season or get on the board in the division to help their playoff chances in an all-knotted-up AFC South? Patrick Mahomes vs. Andrew Luck was supposed to be the marquee QB matchup, but Mahomes and Jacoby Brissett — the only passer in the NFL with multiple TD passes in every game so far — can be just as compelling.

Here's everything to know about betting on Colts vs. Chiefs, including updated odds, trends and our prediction for "Sunday Night Football" (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC) in Week 5.

Redskins confirm Case Keenum will start at QB against Dolphins

  • NFL null null null null

Bill Callahan has made his first major move as the Redskins' interim head coach.

Quarterback Case Keenum, apparently sufficiently recovered from a foot injury, will start Sunday against the Dolphins, the Redskins coach confirmed Friday.

Keenum opened the season as the team's starter but was pulled for rookie Dwayne Haskins in Washington's Week 4 loss to the Giants and later replaced by Colt McCoy in a Week 5 loss to the Patriots.

Callahan also said that first-round pick Dwayne Haskins will be active for the game because he’s the future of the franchise, ESPN.com reported. That likely means McCoy will be inactive for Sunday's game.

Callahan made it clear earlier this week that Haskins would receive more reps with the first team in practice, though he clarified that Haskins was not a candidate for the starting role at this time — and possibly all of 2019.

Baker Mayfield injury update: Quarterback says hip is 'tender'

  • NFL null nu夜网论坛ll null null

The Browns are off to an underwhelming start and the team received a bit of a scare regarding its quarterback on Sunday.

During the team's 32-28 loss to the Seahawks, quarterback Baker Mayfield injured his hip on a scramble in the first half. A few plays later, he was seen down on one knee in pain. He was evaluated in the locker room between series and remained in the game.

After the game, Mayfield said his hip felt "tender," but that it was no excuse for the way he played.

"It hurts," Mayfield said (via ProFootballTalk.com). "But it's a physical game of football."

On Sunday, Mayfield completed 22 of his 37 passes for 249 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He also rushed four times for 35 yards and one score.

The Browns (2-4) head into their bye week before visiting the Patriots (6-0) in Week 8.

    Pope Francis, a Saints fan?

That's what it seemed when he used #Saints Sunday morning. With the hashtag, New Orleans' fleur de lis symbol popped up, alerting Saints and NFL fans.

On Sunday, Pope Francis canonized British Catholic luminary John Henry Newman and four women, all of whom likely were the saints he was referring to. However, Twitter couldn't help but have fun at the Pope's unintentional support of the NFL Saints.

The Jets want offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele to play Monday versus the Patriots.

However, he believes he isn't healthy enough to do so and he didn't practice Saturday because of it.

New York has now fined him for not practicing with what his agent said was a torn labrum, according to SNY.

According to a report from the New York Daily News, Osemele has been told by doctors he needs shoulder surgery. He has also been told he has the ability to play, it's just a matter of if he can tolerate the pain that comes with it.

Bears' Matt Nagy on team's need to establish run game: 'I'm not an idiot'

The Bears have continued to struggle running the ball and hit rock bottom Sunday.

Chicago rushed only five times in its 36-25 loss to the Saints and totaled 17 yards on the ground while Mitchell Trubisky threw 54 times for 251 yards and two scores. Coach Matt Nagy knows the team should have more balance.

"I know we need to run the ball more. I'm not an idiot," Nagy told reporters at a Monday press conference. "I never go into a game saying, 'I want to throw the ball 54 times.' I'd love to go into a game saying, 'I'd like to run the ball 54 times,' but that hasn't happened."

The Bears ranked 11th in rushing yards (1,938) last season but haven't been the same in 2019. Second-year quarterback Trubisky thinks the Bears need to find themselves.

“We have no identity,” Trubisky said Sunday, via the Chicago Tribune. “We’re just searching. We don’t have any rhythm. We’re not the offense we were last year.”

Drew Brees injury update: Saints QB (thumb) aims to return in Week 8 vs. Cardinals

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for Drew Brees.

The Saints quarterback and coach Sean Payton told Fox broadcasters Sunday that the "goal" and "plan" is to have Brees suited up and ready to go for Week 8's game against the Cardinals.

"Sean Payton saying before the game the goal to get (Brees) back is against Arizona next week," sideline reporter Erin Andrews said during the first half of the Saints' game against the Bears, via The Times-Picayune. "He said if he's healthy you play him. And I said, 'So when does he start practicing?' He said he'll practice ... next week ... and we'll make the decision Wednesday or Thursday.

"I went up to Drew Brees, and I said, 'So this is what your coach said, what do you say?' And Brees said, 'Well, I already made my decision. I know when I want to come back.'"

Brees' return will mark seven weeks since he's taken the field ever since he injured his thumb against the Rams. Since then, Teddy Bridgewater has taken over under center, where he has reminded the NFL he is a top-notch quarterback.

Since Bridgewater has taken over, the Saints have gone on a five-game win streak.

Jaguars choose to start Nick Foles, end Gardner Minshew Mania after bye week

We thought we laid out a compelling case for the Jaguars to ride the wave that was Gardner Minshew starting at quarterback and making Jacksonville fun to watch. So much for that.

With Nic夜网论坛k Foles set to return from the shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for seven weeks, the Jaguars are going back to their $88 million man.

Coach Doug Marrone announced Tuesday that Foles will start over Minshew when the Jaguars play the Colts in Week 11. Jacksonville is on a bye in Week 10.

MORE: Why Jags should have stuck with Minshew

Even though Minshew had his worst game yet in Sunday's loss to the Texans, SN's Vinnie Iyer provided four reasons why the Jaguars should have stuck with the rookie sixth-rounder from Washington State. Minshew makes the Jaguars relevant when he is the starter. He also makes game planning against the Jags tougher, has good chemistry with his receivers and and has franchise potential.

"He's done a great job," Marrone said of Minshew on Tuesday. "I feel a whole lot different about him now than I did prior to him playing, in a positive way."

Alas, money talks in the NFL. Jacksonville signed Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract with $45.125 million fully guaranteed at signing in free agency. In contrast, Minshew's rookie contract is scheduled to pay him $2,711,616 over four seasons.

Did the Eagles' Nelson Agholor get caught on Twitter using a burner account?

  • NFL null

Eagles fans have been overly critical of Nelson Agholor this season, and it may have led to the receiver using a burner account on Twitter to defend his name.

If you aren't aware, a burner account is when a public figure (like an athlete) will create a separate, anonymous social media account that seemingly has no connection to them, and is often used to respond to others. Since responding publicly would usually result in more public shaming, some like to respond anonymously through burners.

But, as we've seen with Kevin Durant and former 76ers GM Bryan Colangelo, sometimes you get caught. And that may be the case with Agholor.

Speculation about Agholor's potential burner, @efam33, began early Thursday after Eagles fans noticed it was oddly supporting the receiver. Upon further investigation, every tweet from the account had language supporting Agholor.

The responses from the account ranged from criticizing Carson Wentz, supporting former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, and criticizing Eagles fans themselves.

"Maybe it's because Wentz doesn't throw a better ball than Foles, making it harder for us to catch," one tweet said. "Foles threw a better ball," another tweet read.
