Hank Steinbrenner supports A-Rod, who takes All-Star snub in stride

  • Baseball Snubbed as an All-Star, Alex Rodriguez has support where you might expect it — from Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner — and where you might not — from Donald Trump, ESPN reported. In the end, the person A-Rod most needed to support him as an All-Star — American League manager Ned Yost — didn't. MORE: All-Star Game snubs | Worst ASG starters of last 40 years | 's worst everyday playersSteinbrenner, speaking before A-Rod (.284/.390/.513) was officially left off the AL roster, alluded to the slugger overcoming his injury history, age (39) and season-long suspension in 2014 for PED use. "I think it's one of the greatest comeback years any player has ever had. It's an amazing year," Steinbrenner said. "The bad hips, all the other stuff, the more than a year off at his age. To come back and do what he's done is pretty amazing."Even Trump — who three years ago on New York talk radio called for Steinbrenner to tell A-Rod "You're fired!" — had kind words for the Yankees slugger, telling him has had a "helluva season" and to keep it up.As for A-Rod himself, as the New York P夜网论坛ost noted, he continued his post-suspension role as good soldier.Less than an hour before the announcement, he stood before a crowd at Trump’s golf course at Ferry Point, at a dinner celebrating Hank’s Yanks (the youth baseball team championed by the Yankees owner) and declared, “We’re going to have a lot of fun in the second half of the year.”PH[......]

David Price trade gives Blue Jays hope of ending ugly playoff drought

  • David Price, newly acquired from the Tigers, will make somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen regular-season starts for the Blue Jays in 2015. That’s assuming, of course, that Toronto won’t ask him to attempt to duplicate CC Sabathia’s incredible (and mostly insane) three-days-off effort for the Brewers down the stretch in 2008.  MORE: Most memorable deadline deals | Seven landing spots for CarGoAnd chances are, Price will only make a dozen regular-season starts for the Blue Jays in his entire career. He’s a rental, pure and simple. There’s little hope in Toronto that he’ll opt to sign a long-term deal with the team, not with all the deep-pocket owners who will be hot on his trail when he becomes a free agent after the season (hi Cubs, Dodgers, Yankees).  So the Blue Jays and their fans go into the stretch run with their eyes wide open. It’s relatively hard to blame the Toronto front office for going all-in at this point. The future cost in prospects of acquiring Price and Troy Tulowitzki in a deal earlier this week was incredibly steep, and will almost certainly be a cringe-inducing topic of conversation in town for the next decade.Remember this, though: The Blue Jays are only franchise in baseball that hasn’t made the postseason since that ugly strike left the sport’s fans without a World Series in 1994. They’re also the only franchise that hasn’t made the postseason since the turn of the century. Those aren’t tidbits they send out on season-ticket renewal for[......]

David Ortiz gets ejected from game, then tries to eject umpire

He's made it clear plenty of times before that if a player hasn't been around long enough, there are certain things he can't or shouldn't do.Before Saturday, though, there wasn't a clear ruling on what kind of player has the right to toss an umpire from a game. Johnny Vander Meer watch: Max Scherzer faces Phillies in first start since no-hitter

  • Baseball Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer carries a franchise-record scoreless-innings streak into his start Friday at Philadelphia, but that's not what everyone will be paying attention to against the Phillies. The Johnny Vander Meer watch begins shortly after 7:05 p.m. ET. MORE: Every franchise's best home-team player | NL trad夜网论坛e rumors: Is your team a buyer or seller? In his first start since his controversial near-perfect no-hitter Saturday against the Pirates, Scherzer — who has allowed one hit in his past two starts and no runs in 41 1/3 innings — will seek to become the second pitcher to throw consecutive no-hitters. The Reds' Vander Meer did it in 1938 in what is considered one of baseball's most unmatchable feats. The Washington Post offered five bits of context for Friday's game:— Scherzer, in dominating his past two starts — 18 innings, 26 strikeouts, one hit (a bloop single) and three base runners — might've been more impressive than Vander Meer, who walked as many (11) as he struck out in his no-hitters.— Three pitchers besides Scherzer have thrown a one-hitter and a no-hitter in consecutive starts since 1914. Each struggled in his next start.— Scherzer’s 16-strikeout one-hitter against the Brewers and no-hitter against the Pirates came in his first start this season against both teams. He will be facing the Phillies for the fourth time in 2015, having allowed a total of 14 hits in three starts.—[......]

MORE: Best photos from the All-Star Game | Best photos from the Home Run DerbyCBS Sports suggests there might be some movement on a potential match between Los Angeles and Philadelphia for a Hamels deal, as the Phillies might finally be lowering the asking price on their ace. Top-level prospects Corey Seager and Julio Urias aren't likely to move in any deal, but CBS says rival夜网论坛 executives believe the Dodgers should still have enough talent in their system to complete a trade for Hamels. One reason Hamels might appeal to the Dodgers is cost certainty — albeit at a high cost. The left-hander is under contract through 2018 at $22.5 million per year with a club option for 2019 that could become guaranteed if the pitcher meets certain stipulations. Rob Manfred will meet with Pete Rose 'later this summer'
