NBA awards ballot 2019: Giannis Antetokounmpo or James Harden in MVP race?

TAG

NBA null null Basketball Let the arguments commence.I’ve been voting for MVPs in the NBA for almost 20 years, and this year’s choice was as difficult as any, with the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and Rockets’ James Harden engaged in a duel all season. It was a brain-twister, but I finally made my decision. NBA PLAYOFFS 2019:Full schedule | West breakdown | East breakdownThe rest of the ballot for this NBA awards season wasn’t quite so difficult. The winners for Coach of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year and Rookie of the Year should be consensus picks, with Defensive Player of the Year and maybe Most Improved providing small bits of controversy. With that, SN’s 2018-19 award winners… (Getty Images) https://images.daznservices.com/di/library/sporting_news/6d/33/james-harden-getty-041219-ftrjpg_138ycsi1cg2271kdgrruuypfkd.jpg?t=308512002&w=500&quality=80 NBA MVP list1. James Harden, Rockets2. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks3. Stephen Curry, Warriors4. Paul George, Thunder5. Nikola Jokic, NuggetsThe hunch here is that Antetokounmpo will win this trophy, and just about any voter would concede that either Harden or Antetokounmpo would make a worthy choice. The question, essentially, is whether the seven more games won by Antetokounmpo’s Bucks outweigh the enormous offensive load that Harden had to carry. Everything — Harden’s usage percentage, Antetokounmpo’s shooting percentage, Antetokounmpo’s excellent defense, Harden’s subpar defense, Harden’s historic scoring mark, Antetokounmpo’s perimeter struggles — can be filtered through that lens.Antetokounmpo had better and healthier players, top-to-bottom, around him in 2018-19 and helped push those players to near-maximum output. Harden’s team was wracked with injuries — three starters missed at least 14 games — and questionable front-office choices (Carmelo Anthony)夜网论坛 before being rebuilt as the season went on.The Rockets’ regular starting five was together for just 26 games, but that group had a 21-5 record. The first three players off the Houston bench heading into the playoffs were not with the team when the season started.Additionally, Houston plays in the West, where eight teams won at least 48 games. The Rockets won 53, the Bucks 60.Statistically, the two players stand out in their own ways. Antetokounmpo’s combination of length and athleticism shone through in his numbers: 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.3 steals, 1.5 blocks. Harden’s smarts and toughness shone through in his: a league-high 36.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 7.5 assists. But the load Harden had to carry with such a beaten-up and mish-mashed Rockets roster gives him an[……]

Celtics' win over Raptors could be major 'building block' for Boston

TAG

NBA null Basketball BOSTON — He did it against Kyle Lowry, a veteran bulldog of a defender. He did it against Delon Wright and his 6-8 wingspan. He did it by driving on Pascal Siakam and Serge Ibaka, both skilled shot-blockers. He even did it when guarded by Kawhi Leonard, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year notorious for swallowing up rambunctious point-guard scorers.  The Raptors tried to cover every angle on Boston star Kyrie Irving in their heavyweight matchup against the Celtics here on Friday, but it was Irving’s array of angles that did in Toronto, the conference leaders at 12-3 coming into the game. In a dandy of a November showdown, the Celtics won in overtime, 123-116, behind Irving’s 43 point and 12 assists. MORE: What was wrong with Celtics’ offense? Coaches, scouts weigh in But this game might have夜网论坛 given us a subtler storyline, a possible turning point for the Celtics. The team entered the year with such high expectations, but were just 8-6 to start the year, including a disastrous 1-4 road trip that rendered those expectations hollow.  With Boston integrating established veteran stars — Irving, 2017 marquee free agent Gordon Hayward, Al Horford — with budding youngsters Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier, the Celtics were lacking order. The vets were deferring too much. The youngbloods were forcing too much.  On Friday, the Celtics seemed to find their core triumvirate. If every championship team needs a Big Three, the Celtics will start with Irving, flanked by Tatum as the No. 2 option and Hayward alongside. Getting the ball into those sets of hands most consistently gives the Celtics their best chance of fulfilling their massive expectations.  Irving, who had been uncharacteristically gun-shy when it comes to driving to the rim (he was averaging only 9.4 drives, 42nd in the league, before Friday), drove 16 times, went 7 for 9 on those plays and went to the free throw line four times. That’s Irving’s strength, and he played to it.  For him, the problem for the Celtics has been shot selection. Until Friday, at least.“I think we have to find a happy balance,” Irving said, “between taking some good 3s rather than just waiting for the great ones to come, and then just attacking the basket. … Any time we go to the rim like that, that’s when our runs start. When we’re attacking the rim and getting to the free-throw line, we’re a totally different team.” Tatum appears to have snapped himself out of an early November slump and had his third excellent game in the past week. He finished with 21 points (on 8-for-13 shooting) and seven rebounds, and in his past four games he has averaged 20.9 points on 49.2 percent shooting and 52.0 percent 3-point shooting. What's next for Kelly Oubre after wild trade? 'Time to rise with the Suns'

TAG

NBA null null Basketball BOSTON — Kelly Oubre came into the season fully aware this was a possibility. He’d carved out his niche for three seasons in Washington, as a defender and shooter off the bench, but with restricted free agency coming this summer and the cap-strapped Wizards likely unable to match any significant offer for Oubre, he’d been told early in the year that a trade could be coming.”It was a scenario, I knew that,” Oubre said on Wednesday. “My agent gave me a scenario, what could happen this year. And I never thought of it, because I was on the team, I had been on the team, I was focused on the moment. Things happened the way they happened, and now I am here. I am focused on this moment.” TRADE GRADES: Ariza won’t fix struggling WizardsThe end result of what’s happened is that Oubre is now a member of the Suns, after a decidedly tumultuous few days. Late last week, it was widely reported that Oubre would be leaving the Wizards, headed to Memphis as part of a three-team trade with the Suns. But that trade fell apart over confusion as to whether the Grizzlies were trading Dillon Brooks or MarShon Brooks. Finally, the Suns and Wizards resurrected the deal as a swap of Trevor Ariza for Oubre and Austin Rivers, since waived by Phoenix. There were a handful of teams interested in a deal for Oubre, according to league sources, in addition to Memphis and Phoenix — among them was the Pelicans, Oubre’s hometown team. But New Orleans could not make a good enough offer to pry him from Washington.”Pretty crazy, man, it is something new for me,” Oubre said. “I have never been in this type of situation. It is a process. I am just following the Lord’s plan for me. I am just kind of settling back into reality now. I am excited for the change, excited t夜网论坛o see what comes.”Now, Oubre enters an entirely new situation in Phoenix, going from a role player off the bench with a veteran team — he averaged 12.9 points in 26.0 minutes — to a spot with the Suns in which he is expected to eventually start and be the team’s No. 3 player behind guard Devin Booker and rookie big man Deandre Ayton. He’s also considered a veteran addition among the Suns, a team on a surprising four-game winning streak after defeating the Celtics in Oubre’s debut. With 18 playoff games to his credit, at only 23 years old, he’s the third-most experienced postseason player on the roster. Only Jamal Crawford and Ryan Anderson have more.”This tells you who we are as a team,” Suns coach Igor Koskoskov said with a smirk. “He’s an experienced, 23-year-old veteran. He has playoff experience, and that we don’t have. But he’s a young player and still has a lot to[……]

Celtics-Warriors matchup provides all NBA Finals intrigue we've been missing

TAG

NBA 夜网论坛 null null null Basketball BOSTON — Warriors coach Steve Kerr looked across the floor at the Celtics at TD Garden and saw something familiar. There were two points guard, a 6-3 star (Kyrie Irving) and his 6-1 backup (Terry Rozier). There were two big men, Al Horford and Aron Baynes, both 6-10. Then he saw six guys ranging from 6-4 to 6-9, all multi-positional offensively and defensively. What Kerr saw was a team that reflected his own, winners of three of the last four championships. Less frontline talent, for sure, but maybe more depth and every bit as much ability to create mismatches. MORE: Kerr hits major milestone with win over Celtics”They built their team in a way that matches up with us pretty well in terms of like-sized wings,” Kerr said. “You’ve got all these guys like (Jayson) Tatum and (Jaylen) Brown, Gordon Hayward, Marcus Smart who can guard multiple positions, which is how we’re built. When you have that kind of defensive versatility, it’s a lot easier to gain your footing in a game. “They’ve always battled us hard. We’ve had good matchups.”The Celtics again battled the Warriors hard in a national game on Saturday night, a game with 21 lead changes, 14 ties — including in the final 46 seconds — and no lead that reached double digits. Golden State came out the victor, 115-111, led by 33 points from star forward Kevin Durant. But maybe the real winner was the rest of us. This was a playoff-level game of adjustments and countermoves, of forcing matchup problems and poking at each team’s small weaknesses. It was the teams’ best players facing defensive challenges and finding ways to respond. All this was done in the kind of high-decibel environment usually reserved for important playoff games.”It was amazing,” said center DeMarcus Cousins, playing in his fourth game of the season. “I have missed this feeling for a long time. The atmosphere was incredible. The fans were into it from start to finish. I enjoyed it, man, it was a lot of fun.”For NBA fans who have been starved for a decent matchup in the NBA Finals after the Warriors took just nine games to win the last two championships, this was promising.MORE: Tracy McGrady explains why he wants Durant to leaveIrving, a thorn in the Warriors’ side going back to his days in Cleveland, had 32 points on 27 shots, but was heaped with Golden State defenders late in the game to prevent home-court heroics. Giannis Antetokounmpo leads rising Bucks, but Milwaukee isn't just one-man show

TAG

NBA null Basketball On Friday night in Minneapolis, after just one half of basketball, the Bucks led the Timberwolves by 25 points. It’s not common to see such a wide margin by halftime, especially with the home team down, but it makes sense considering each team’s circumstances. The Timberwolves are going through Jimmy Butler drama and haven’t looked like last year’s 47-win squad. They currently sit at 3-4 with their Western Conference playoff hopes in shambles. The Bucks don’t look the same either. They’ve always been well-equipped with an MVP candidate, a potential All-Star and a litter of other supporting pieces, but this version of the Bucks is more fully realized than any we’ve seen before.TRADE RUMORS: Which big men could soon hit open market? In the past, Milwaukee has generally run everything through the aforementioned MVP candidate, Giannis Antetokounmpo, with moderate success. A year ago, the Bucks finished with a record of 44-38, good enough for seventh in the East. Antetokounmpo continued his crazy ascension, but did so with a 30.6 usage rate, not far behind the likes of LeBron James and Russell Westbrook. Unselfish as he is with a talented secondary scorer in Khris Mid夜网论坛dleton by his side, the team generally played at the beat of Giannis’ drum. This year, Antetokounmpo actually has his usage rate up over 35, but he didn’t add to that halfway through Milwaukee’s onslaught in Minneapolis. He was only 1-of-5 from the field for five points with a couple assists to his name, but not much else. The Bucks went on to win by 30 points, and Antetokounmpo got his numbers, but that’s not the point here. What matters is that the Bucks look like a team that’s taken the next step, and that’s happening because they — Giannis and the collective — are playing a new brand of basketball. It’s working. After Monday night’s win over the Raptors, the Bucks now sit at a perfect 7-0. They top the league in net rating (small sample size alert!) and have the league’s second-best defensive rating after spending last season in the bottom half of the league. Antetokounmpo is a big part of this, but it’s much more than that.Last year, the Bucks spent more time getting blocks and steals, landing in the top five in both categories. This year, they’re defending at the point of attack and closing down the lane.In addition, they’re crashing the boards to close out possessions. Milwaukee is currently eighth in defensive rebounding percentage after spending the last five years in the bottom five.A year ago, the Bucks played offense through their star — generally an inside-out effort. They were among the top 10 in shots taken in the restricted area in 2017-18, per NBA.com. That number by itself is a solid figure, but what killed them[……]

D'Angelo Russell ‘definitely’ wants to stay with Nets

TAG

NBA null Basketball D’Angelo Russell doesn’t want to leave Brooklyn. The 23-year-old guard developed into an All-Star this season for the Nets and led the franchise to its first playoff appearance since 2014-15. Russell will be a restricted free agent this summer. “I definitely want 夜网论坛to be here,” Russell said Wednesday, via the New York Daily News. “But I also know it’s a business, too. So. I’m not going to play that role like I don’t know what could possibly happen. Say somebody comes here that I have to be a part of (a transaction to acquire them), I know that could be a possibility.“So, I just want to stay in this moment and not speak too soon about anything.” Russell was originally selected by the Lakers with the second pick in 2015. He spent two seasons in Los Angeles before he was traded to Brooklyn in June 2017. Russell averaged a career-high 21.1 points and seven assists in 2018-19.“I set so many goals going into this season,” Russell said. “I wanted to be an All Star, I wanted to make the playoffs, I wanted to stay healthy and play 80-plus games. … I just wanted to be healthy. I know if I’m healthy that will take care of a lot things. So, my prayers, all that stuff, were answered, I couldn’t be more proud of the way we handled it this year.” Related News NBA playoffs 2019: Joel Embiid says 76ers 'can win it all' Nets GM Sean Marks suspended, fined after entering referee locker room Russell said he has a strong relationship with Nets coach Kenny Atkinson.“I take pride in creating genuine relationships with people that genuinely care about you,” Russell said. “And coach (Atkinson) is one of the most genuine, emotional, man he’s a great dude. And I thank him as much as I can just for giving me the opportunity to come over here and be me and learn how to be a better me at the same time. NBA trade rumors: The good, bad and confusing for surprising Rockets-Suns deal

TAG

NBA null null Basketball The Rockets and Suns agreed to a deal late Thursday night that could only be initially summed up as… wait, what happened?Houston will send Ryan Anderson and 2018 second-round pick De’Anthony Melton to Phoenix in exchange for Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Rockets had been looking to move Anderson’s contract (two years, $41 million remaining) for more than a year, but this surprising trade isn’t just about pushing salaries off the books. Let’s take a look at the good, bad and confusing for each side in this rare August swap…DEVENEY: What should we expect from 2019 NBA Draft? What this trade means for the RocketsGood: For Houston, th夜网论坛is is about saving money. Finally clearing Anderson’s contract saves the Rockets roughly $11 million ahead of the 2018-19 season. It became obvious Anderson no longer had a spot in Mike D’Antoni’s rotation during the playoffs, as his strengths (3-point shooting and rebounding) didn’t offset his weaknesses (lack of playmaking and major defensive limitations) against championship contenders like the Warriors. The Rockets acquire Knight (26 years old) and Chriss (21), young but flawed players in need of a change of scenery. Knight should be able to serve as a capable backup to Chris Paul and James Harden at point guard if he remains healthy, and Chriss could thrive in a limited role as an athletic finisher in the pick-and-roll and a switchable big man when Clint Capela heads to the bench.Bad: It has to be disappointing for Rockets fans to see this return after all the speculation about an Anderson deal. Perhaps some of those bigger dreams sounded unrealistic — that whole LeBron James idea was never going to come to fruition — but there aren’t many reasons to hold optimism about Knight and Chriss.Knight missed the entire 2017-18 season after tearing his ACL last summer, but even putting aside the injury concerns, he just wasn’t an effective player the previous year. In 2016-17, Knight finished with the worst field goal (39.8) and 3-point field goal (32.4) percentages of his career. He was also one of the worst defenders in the league with a Defensive Real Plus-Minus of minus-3.08, just ahead of Trey Burke and Jordan Clarkson.A former top-10 pick, Chriss still has room to grow, but he has not developed nearly as quickly as the Suns would have liked, making it easier to cut ties after only two full seasons. Chriss became a starter immediately as a rookie, and his team was significantly worse with him on the floor. Chriss showed a few flashes of being a competent player this past season, but he is far from being a cons[……]

Kevin Durant over LeBron James? Warriors star thought 2017 Finals would change everything

TAG

NBA null Basketball LeBron James is viewed as the best player in basketball, and that’s a title Kevin Durant is desperately trying to gain, it seems.Ethan Strauss of The Athletic detailed why many think Durant will leave the Warriors and why that decision is impacted by James. One important part of his report: Strauss says Durant thought defeating James and the Cavs in the 2017 NBA Finals would have people labeling him No. 1 in the NBA. From The Athletic:Some teammates believe that his biggest successes are indivisible from what currently ails. Or moreover, the reception of such successes. Sources say that Durant believed his besting of LeBron James in the 2017 Finals would get him hailed as the game’s top player, a mantle he’s craved for some time. While LeBron averaged a 33.6 point-per-game triple-double in that Finals, Durant was superior defensively and hit the series’ biggest shot right in the King’s face.Instead, there was no grand reordering of rankings, and only so much credit to be had for a dominant playoff run. KD, who was “tired of being second” way back in 2013, was still stuck there reputationally, even in ultimate victory. He was still behind LeBron in the eyes of pundits, basketball Twitter, and perhaps most importantly, at Nike, who’s employed Durant longer than any team. Then, th next Finals unfolded in much the same way, with much the same result, all while Warriors fans cheered loudest for the smaller MVP’s baskets.MORE: Warriors worried about KD leaving? Durant is known for not being able to handle criticism very well. He famously had the whole burner account situation — he’d anonymously defend himself from people online attacking his character. He’s even publicly responded to trolls on social media, which isn’t something most superstars have been caught doing. And while all of this is great content for NBA Twitter to enjoy, it’s also interesting how it may play into Durant’s future. As Strauss notes, Durant’s desire to be the greatest means he may leave the Warriors to try and prove his worth on a roster that doesn’t look like an All-Star weekend lineup. He’s in a great position to bring in championships every year, but he’s not in a great position to gain the recognition he apparently desires. But it’s not like anyone views Durant as a bad player. Most just don’t view him as above James, and for good reason.Sure, Durant has won back-to-back NBA Finals MVPs, but it was pretty much expected. James stole the show by averaging a triple-double during the 2017 Finals. Of course people were going to keep him at No. 1.So what’s next for KD? The obvious assumption is he leaves Golden State this summer to join the Knicks, who now have the cap space to bring him in. If Durant can help the Knick[……]

Lonzo Ball planned unauthorized surgery, report says

TAG

NBA null Basketball Lonzo Ball apparently wanted to go about his recovery from a January ankle injury differently than the Lakers did.According to The Athletic, Ball nearly had surgery on his injured left ankle in February at the urging of his father LaVar Ball and former business partner Alan Foster. Ball flew to Ohio in February for the procedure, but according to The Athletic, the team didn’t find out about the possibility of him going under the knife until he told general manager Rob Pelinka when he was already there. The Ball family had previously worked with the doctor who would have done the procedure as he had already operated on Lonzo’s brother LiAngelo. Pelinka had to convince Ball not to undergo the surgery and brought him back to Los Angeles to continue his rehab from the ankle injury he suffered in a January game against the Rockets. The 21-year-old would not play again in 2019 after suffering the injury and the Lakers closed out the season 12-23 with Ball on t夜网论坛he shelf. Timberwolves have three options, one solution to end Jimmy Butler trade drama

TAG

NBA null Basketball It has been more than a month since Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler requested a trade and gave the front office his initial list of teams. And yet, with the NBA regular season in full swing, Butler remains in Minnesota. While the four-time All-Star continues to perform at a high level (22.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.4 steals through nine games), the tension simmering under the surface is impossible to ignore. Butler got booed in his home debut — then received “MVP” chants by the end of the same game. Fans are literally chanting “Jimmy Butler” at Karl-Anthony Towns to distract him at the foul line.  TRADE RUMORS: Heat’s Pat Riley “pulling the plug” on Butler dealNone of this is ideal, especially for Towns, the franchise cornerstone who has become an easy target after Butler’s infamous practice session. No one side comes out clean in this situation, but attempting to divvy up the blame is not the primary concern here. The Wolves have some decisions to make. Minnesota president Tom Thibodeau, general manager Scott Layden and owner Glen Taylor must come to an agreement on how to approach Butler’s immediate future. There are three options on the table, but only one solution.Trade Jimmy Butler — right nowTake any kind of reasonable trade package. Just pull off the Band-Aid and be done with it.Thibodeau has held onto some strange hope that Butler would return and make the Timberwolves a happy family again, but it’s not realistic. Knowing Butler will not re-sign with the team next summer, Taylor made it clear a trade is coming.”Initially, when Butler told him that he wanted to leave you know Tom did everything he could to try to keep Jimmy here,” Taylor told the Star Tribune. “I understand that. They have a close relationship.”Thibs brought him here so that he would stay here, but eventually I think that listening to Jimmy, Thibs and I are lined up on this. We need to be looking at a trade.”So why not call the Heat or another interested team and iron out the details? The Wolves don’t want to force a deal and be left wondering what other pieces were available had they exercised a little more patience. The front office already kept Butler through the start of the regular season. Don’t panic now.Keep playing Jimmy ButlerThere’s a reason teams have been willing to engage with the Timberwolves despite the fact that this has become, as Kevin Garnett puts it, a complete “s— storm.” Butler is a top-15 player in the NBA, and he undoubtedly contributes to winning. The Wolves went 37-22 with Butler in the lineup last season but only 10-13 without him, dropping them down the standings to the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. He is Minnesota’s most reliable player on both ends of the floor,[……]

Sorry, Adam Silver, Raptors' strategy with Kawhi Leonard is a victory for load management

TAG

NBA null null null Basketball There’s a stat lingering in the background of this year’s NBA Finals that will present commissioner Adam Silver some discomfort and challenge. It boils down to these numbers: 14 and five. The 14 is the number of games the Raptors held out Kawhi Leonard because of “load management.” He missed 22 altogether, two for personal reasons and six for a variety of small injuries (sore foot, hip bruise, sore knee), but it is the 14 healthy scratches that should most concern Silver. Those scratches indicate that when the Raptors planned out Leonard’s season, it was predetermined that he was not going to appear in more than 68 games. As for the five, that’s the number of total games that the Warriors’ star core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green were held out during the season for the stated purpose of managing loads.NBA FINALS PREVIEW:Predicting Warriors vs. Raptors series The Raptors rested Leonard consistently throughout the year. Since the season ended, he has been the clear MVP of the playoffs, a dominating force on both ends of the floor who has gotten better as April turned to May and could do the same as May turns to June.Leonard’s scoring leapt to from 26.6 points to 31.2 points with 50.7 percent shooting and 38.8 percent 3-point shooting. That’s夜网论坛 an improvement on his regular-season numbers, a rare thing in the playoffs, where NBA scoring drops from 111.2 points per game to 107.6 and shooting goes from 46.1 percent to 44.2.The Warriors have a reputation for resting players throughout the season, but truth is, they don’t do it all that much. During their five-year dynasty, Curry has missed only four games because of rest, Thompson has missed five and Green has missed eight. Durant has missed only one game for rest in his three years with the team. Now the Warriors enter the NBA Finals a bit haggard, even if they’re coming off a sweep of the Trail Blazers and will have had a rejuvenating 10-day rest since finishing off the Western Conference finals. Durant is out with a strain of his right calf dating back three weeks, the second time this season he has suffered that injury. Both Curry and Thompson battled ankle injuries at the end of the first round of the playoffs and into the second round, though neither has missed a game yet this postseason. The lesson here is that no matter what Silver and the folks in the NBA office do to remove the stain of teams resting healthy players in games for which fans and broadcasting entities still had to pay full value, he can’t legislate th[……]

Kings' Divac: Cauley-Stein needs to be more consistent

TAG

NBA null Basketball Willie Cauley-Stein’s future remains unclear. The Kings have until June 30 to extend the 25-year-old center a qualifying offer, which would make him a restricted free agent this summer. General manager Vlade Divac, however, said the team was still considering its options. “It’s a tough question,” Divac said during a recent interview with The Sacramento Bee. “We would like to keep Willie in terms of his talent potential, but he still needs to show us the consistency that we are looking for. We ar夜网论坛e talking.”Cauley-Stein averaged 11.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in 81 appearances for the Kings this season. He also dished out 2.4 assists per game and shot 55.6% from the field. “I’ve gotten better every year,” Cauley-Stein told The Sacramento Bee. “I’m only going to continue to get better and better, and I’m just scratching the surface. I’m 25 years old and I’ve been hooping at a high level for a long time.”The Kings originally selected Cauley-Stein out Kentucky with the sixth pick in the 2015 draft. He has spent his entire four-year career with the franchise. Related News Kyrie Irving free agency rumors: Celtics have 'had little, if any, communication' with star in recent weeks “I just want to hoop freely,” Cauley-Stein said. “That’s kind of the biggest thing for me, just going somewhere, whether it’s here or anywhere else, just taking that next evolution to the game where you’re not just a rim runner. You’re a pick-and-pop guy sometimes. You can get rolling with what the defense gives you.”The Kings “have placed an emphasis on improving the center position” this summer, according to an earlier report from NBC Sports Bay Area. They had been linked to Nikola Vucevic, but they’re unlikely to pursue him, that report says.Sacramento could look to add Dewayne Dedmon or DeAndre Jordan, NBC Sports’ report notes. It also may try to sign Jonas Valanciunas. The Kings finished last season with a 39-43 and missed the playoffs for a 13th straight season. They’ve also been linked to 76ers forward Tobias Harris.[……]

Raptors have no choice but to refocus, respond in Game 6 after letting NBA title slip away

TAG

NBA null null Basketball null TORONTO — On the precipice of history with a chance to close out the NBA Finals on their own court, the Raptors were unable to seal the deal, falling to the Warriors by a final score of 106-105 to send the series back to Oakland for Game 6 on Thursday night. The Raptors struggled throughout Game 5 from the outside, hitting just 8-of-32 (25.0 percent) on 3-point attempts, but they took over in the fourth quarter, with Kawhi Leonard at one point going on his own personal 10-0 run. Up by six points with less than three minutes to go in the game, though, the Raptors failed to close it out, thanks in part to a 9-0 run by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. With seconds ticking down on Toronto’s final possession, Kyle Lowry’s buzzer-beater was blocked by Draymond Green, who sent the ball out of bounds to the utter dismay of the hometown crowd. No one said it would be easy. WHAT A FINISH.The final shot is off, and it’s headed back to Oracle. pic.twitter.com/PDSoD0O1N4— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) June 11, 2019MORE: Takeaways from Warriors’ thrilling Game 5 win over RaptorsThe Warriors were a desperate team on the brink of elimination, and they played that way from the outset. They pulled out all the stops Monday night, starting Kevin Durant despite the fact he had not played since suffering a right calf strain during Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. Durant was brilliant, scoring 11 points in 12 minutes before leaving the court — and the arena — with what appeared to be an Achilles tendon injury. And yet, with the threat of Durant gone, Toronto still couldn’t put the final nail in the coffin.Facing adversity and being involved in a 3-1 series is nothing new to Golden State. In 2016, the Warriors came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Thunder in the Western Conference finals, only to blow a 3-1 lead to the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals that same year. Warriors coach Steve Kerr was asked prior to the game about what stood out with those series.”Same thing that stands out in every series that I’ve ever been involved in, player, coach, GM — one game turns a series,” Kerr said. “It changes the momentum. It changes the feel. And so the whole focus is just win a game. So you don’t need to look beyond tonight. You just need to go out and play well and win a game and then go from there.”Golden State now has that one win under its belt. The big question is how Toronto reacts. The Raptors have proven themselves to be the dominant team all series and have gone about their business with the focus and determin[……]

Chris Paul-James Harden tension comes from frustration

TAG

NBA null Basketball Rockets GM Daryl Morey on Monday characterized reported tension between stars James Harden and Chris Paul as the result of the two “high-level competitors” whose “only goal in life at this point is to win the title.”Appearing on ESPN Radio’s “Golic & Wingo,” Morey was responding to a long ESPN story, published Monday under a headline that read in part, “An unsettling vibe surrounds these Rockets,” in which they were described as a team with “too much damn turmoil.” “There’s some hard feelings right now everywhere,” an unidentified high-ranking Rockets source told ESPN.Morey’s radio appearance covered several topics, but included his reaction to perceived tension between Harden and Paul, and the GM confirmed outright that Paul has not asked to be traded. But Morey also admitted there are frustrated individuals that include Harden, Paul, coach Mike D’Antoni and Morey himself as the Rockets have continued to struggle to overtake the Warriors in the Western Conference.”I’m frustrated, our top players are frustrated, Mike D’Antoni is frustrated,” Morey said. “We want to take the last step and be the champion, and I think it’s good that there is tension in the sense that we all want to win.” Related News Raptors players discuss Kawhi Leonard’s impending free agency Celtics, Al Horford discussing new contract, report says Anthony Davis trade could limit Lakers' cap space for third star, report says “We are right there in the mix and probably the favorites going into next year.”-@dmorey on the Rockets getting lost in the shuffle amid the Anthony Davis to LA hype. pic.twitter.com/vplAwuKp2w— Golic and Wingo (@GolicAndWingo) June 17, 2019According to ESPN, there is more than frustration and tension. From Monday’s 3,300-word story: “There is a disconnect between the front office and D’Antoni, who wasn’t in favor of the Rockets’ decision to part ways with five members of his coaching staff but didn’t fight Morey’s recommendations for the changes.
