Kyle Lowry may have given LeBron James a little extra motivation

TAG

NBA The Raptors will face a Cavs team in the Eastern Conference finals that has been firing on all cylinders through a perfect 8-0 stretch this postseason. Now they might have to deal with an angry LeBron James, too. After Toronto’s Game 7 victory over the Heat on Sunday afternoon, Raptors guard Kyle Lowry may have thrown a subtle shot toward James in his postgame interview with ESPN’s Doris Burke. MORE: Curry joins elite company | LeBron, master of mind games”LeBron’s probably one of the best players in the league, besides Steph (Curry),” Lowry said. “Kyrie (Irving)’s a tough matchup, and Kevin Love’s always a tough matchup. But we’re going to go in there and play our game and try to go out there and do our job and see what happens.” (Burke’s question about James and the Cavs comes around the 1:05 mark in the video below.)There’s a very good chance Lowry didn’t mean anything negative toward James when he said “besides Steph.” But given LeBron’s comments about “MVP” not necessarily meaning “best in the league,” James may not take it that way.If James didn’t want to make a big deal about Curry winning his second straight MVP, he would have hit the usual platitudes. “Amazing player, incredible season, love watching him play, good f夜网论坛or the game, blah blah blah.” By adding the bit about what valuable really means, King James showed he is not ready to relinquish his throne, and he wants another shot at the Warriors.Don’t be surprised if LeBron comes out with a little extra fire Tuesday night when the Cavs square off with the Raptors in Game 1.[……]

NBPA website decides to ignore Derrick Rose's rape trial in extensive puff piece

TAG

NBA Message control, branding, good P.R. — that’s the business the National Basketball Players Association website is in: making its members look good. When you can take all that and wrap it in a nice-to-read package, you’re doing things right. So it makes sense to see a roughly 3,000-word profile on Derrick Rose go live at the NBPA’s website Tuesday. Today, though, Rose isn’t just the Knicks’ new point guard; he’s not just the guy trying to regain some of his all-world form, or the guy who’s adjusting to life in NYC, or the guy who wants to “(Open) Up on Change, Life off the Court and Empowering Children,” like the headline says. Today, Rose is also a defendant in a gang-rape case. In what’s either a supreme coincidence or an act of planned misdirection, the piece went live on the biggest day of the pre-trial process. In Los Angeles, Rose’s lawyers are arguing whether 15 issues should be fair game when the trial starts on Oct. 4. These aren’t small matters; a judge will decide, among other things, whether the woman accusing Rose has to reveal her identity and if her past sexual history is fair game for the defense. MORE: Ugliest sex scandals in sportsSo, today sets the tone for one of the most important events of Rose’s life and the coverage of a high-profile sexual assault case. Most of all, it sets the tone for the public treatment of his accuser. She said the relationship fizzled and then ended in June 2013, when he asked her for group sex. By August, he was back in town, and she texted him, she says, to get some sort of closure on their relationship. He invited her and her friend to his house, and that’s when their stories diverge.I started blacking out shortly after I arrived. It was in flashes. I remember burning my hand. I remember being at the fence where the gated yard was, which was very high up, and trying to throw the gemstones over the fence. That’s mainly the last thing I remember before I started completely blacking out. I only remember from that point on music and yelling. OKC Thunder film session: 5 reasons their offense can keep going vs. Warriors

TAG

NBA The Thunder weren’t expected to beat夜网论坛 the Spurs in a playoff series. Despite having the second most efficient offense during the season, Oklahoma City overpowering the best defensive team in the NBA seemed highly unlikely. Yet the Thunder did just that by scoring 106 points per 100 possessions against a Spurs team that allowed 96.6 points per 100 possessions in the regular season. It was a sobering series for the Spurs and a revealing one for the Thunder. Often criticized for their stagnant offense, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook found ways to impose their will on Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to lead Oklahoma City back to the Western Conference finals for the fourth time since 2011. The Thunder didn’t look like the same team that struggled to close out games, either, with two of their four wins being determined by a total of five points — and a couple of egregiously missed call. MORE: 16 best teams in NBA history that  didn’t  win the titleAlmost every basket the Thunder scored against the Spurs in those victories can be broken down into five categories. With the Warriors now being the only thing standing between them and the NBA Finals, let’s take a look at how they were successful against San Antonio’s defense to determine whether or not they can also give the Warriors trouble. The Durant conundrumThe Thunder are predictable on offense. They don’t move the ball around the perimeter like the Cavaliers and rarely do they make bang-bang plays like the Warriors. But they don’t necessarily need to do all that with a No. 1 option like Durant, who can create his shot in a variety of ways and blow up defensive schemes all by himself in the same vein as LeBron James.Just watch Durant get deep post position against Kawhi Leonard and make the Defensive Player of the Year look hopeless with an effortless step-back jump shot. It’s not complicated. It’s just Durant being Durant. There isn’t a defender in the league who can stop Durant in those situations, which is something Wizards forward Jared Dudley discussed on ESPN’s The Lowe Post podcast: “[The Thunder] are very predictable, but at the same time, when Durant has you at the top of the key or the wing, you’re still in a vulnerable state of mind.”IN-DEPTH: The jazzed up pick-and-roll that powers the ThunderIt doesn’t make it easier that Durant’s been doing this his entire career because he’s still a unicorn in the NBA. He can shoot over traditional small forwards, and peskier defenders tend not to have the length to effectively disrupt his shot. Take the Thunder’s Game 1 loss out of the equation and Durant averaged 31.0 points per game against the best defense in the NBA on 51.4 percent shooting from the field. Scoring efficiently is what he does.Durant doesn’t need to create his own shot, either. Warriors need Stephen Curry back — just not for Game 4

TAG

NBA After everyone was done digesting the Trail Blazers’ Game 3 victory over the Warriors on Saturday night, attention shifted away from Damian Lillard — as it too often does — to the question with no clear answer. When is Stephen Curry coming back? MORE: 10 devastating injuries that crushed NBA championship dreamsThe knee-jerk answer is stop waiting and tell him to put on his jersey immediately. The nonchalant answer is the Warriors are one of the greatest teams in history and they can survive another series before advancing to the Western Conference finals. The correct answer? That lies somewhere in the middle. When Curry sprained his right MCL on April 24, Golden State announced he would be re-evaluated in two weeks. He’s at the bare minimum of his recovery with Game 4 coming up Monday night. While Curry made some progress by playing 2-on-2 on the Moda Center floor ahead of Game 3, it’s still 2-on-2 with the coaching staff and his first “actual basketball,” as Steve Kerr said. It’s a big jump to go from guarding player development coach Chris DeMarco to keeping up with Lillard.Obviously the Warriors are a better team with Curry, but they are more than competent enough to win a game in Portland without him. Prior to Game 3, the Warriors averaged 112.5 points per game on 47 percent shooting in two postseason games with Curry active. They averaged 110.6 points per game on 48 percent shooting over the five postseason games in which Curry didn’t play. They remain a strong defensive squad and will make the necessary adjustments to keep the Trail Blazers from exploding for 120.One could argue it’s a bad sign Klay Thompson and Draymond Green combined for 72 points with Green draining 8-for-12 from 3-point range, yet Golden State lost by 12. The flipside is Andre Iguodala, Harrison Barnes and Shaun Livingston will contribute more than they did. Oh, and Al-Farouq Aminu probably won’t put up 23 with a near-perfect shooting performance.MORE: How much money will it take to land Festus Ezeli? We’re talking about the champs here. They dropped a game to the Rockets in the first round, but there was no panic. There certainly won’t be any now.But the “maybes” exist. Maybe Lillard goes insane and keeps shooting swish-seeking missiles. Maybe Aminu throws regression toward the mean out the window. Maybe Thompson and Green have off nights. Maybe it takes a Curry a little longer to shake off the rust than anticipated, or maybe his knee and ankle won’t let him go into full MVP mode. All of those maybes are concerning. The Warriors need Curry in order to capture back-to-back titles, and they may very well need him to beat the Trail Blazers, a group playing like it has nothing to lose because, really, they don’t. It’s easy to dismiss Portland as the fun, Lillard-led underdogs who will ultimately fall, but this is the only team to defeat Golden State twice this season.Curry should be thrown into the fire soone[……]

Hawks' Bazemore on rematch with LeBron: 'We definitely have a chip on our shoulder'

TAG

NBA BOSTON — Kent Bazemore was sitting at his locker here at TD Garden, sweat not entirely dried. The Hawks had just knocked off the Celtics in Game 6, 104-92, giving Atlanta the series and a ticket to the second round, where Bazemore will see Cleveland and a certain superstar player for whom Bazemore has always seemed to have a special resentment. That would be LeBron James. And whatever Bazemore’s sentiment when it comes to James may be, the most pertinent facts remain: In last year’s Eastern Conference finals, James rang up the Hawks’ defense — meaning, largely, DeMarre Carro夜网论坛ll and Bazemore — for 30.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 9.3 assists per game in an easy sweep. MORE: Must-see first-round photos | Classic photos of LeBron“I’m ready,” Bazemore said. “I’m excited. Rematch from last year, they swept us last year and we definitely have a chip on our shoulder about that.” Bazemore has long had a chip against James, at least as far as Twitter goes. Tweets dug up from 2010, when Bazemore was at Old Dominion and still a long way from earning a starting spot on an Eastern Conference playoff team, show some pretty palpable disdain from the college-junior version of Bazemore — he called James some unprintable names, and repeatedly harped on the notion that James lacked the gumption to play well in the fourth quarter.“LeBron is equivalent to 7-11,” he said in one relatively mild dig. “He doesn’t close.”In last year’s playoffs, things got chippy between James and Bazemore, and Bazemore gave James a shove at one point in Game 2 of their series. James backed down Bazemore — who is listed at just 201 pounds — frequently in that series, but Bazemore said he and the Hawks have learned much since.MORE: The 12 worst playoff chokes of all time, ranked“When you face LeBron in a series for the first time,” he said, “it’s like a wow factor because you see him during the season three or four times, but when you’ve got to see him every night, every day, in back-to-back games, he’s a different beast. He’s a load. Last year, we got that out of the way, so I think we are ready to get out there.”Still, if the Hawks have any hope of playing better against the Cavs this time around, it’s going to be up to Bazemore and his compadres to handle James better than what they’ve shown they can do. James played as well against the Hawks as anyone this year, averaging 27.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 7.7 assists, while shooting 57.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the 3-point line. The Cavs won all three games.Overall, though, Bazemore said the Hawks have played better defense. They held Boston to just 93.8 points per game and 38.4 percent shooting, well below their season averages of 105.7 points and 43.9 percent shooting, respectively. The Cavs averaged 105.8 points in their sweep of Atlanta last year.“Obviously, it is another year where people learn the defense and the defensive schemes,” Bazemore said. “[……]
