Shaquille O'Neal enters Hall of Fame still 'upset' his dominance was 'cut short'

TAG

NBA SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Shaquille O’Neal was supposed to be ready for a call at noon from the folks in this city a little more than five months ago. But he was unavailable, it turned out. “I missed the 12 o’clock call,” O’Neal recalled. “So, I was thinking, ‘Oh, shit, does that mean I’m out?’”Of course not. The call was from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and there was no way anyone was keeping O’Neal from there; he will be inducted on Friday night. The world knew O’Neal was a virtual sure-shot Hall of Famer going back to his college days at LSU from 1989-92, right through his 15 All-Star appearances, his three Finals MVP awards and his four championships. MORE: Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2016O’Neal has one of the most impressive résumés in NBA history. Of that, there is no doubt, and he will readily tell you so. From 1999-2003, there was no one better in the game, and maybe no better big man over a four-year span in the history of the game than O’Neal at that time. But there’s also something about O’Neal’s NBA career that remains bothersome, a feeling that, as great as he was, he shortchanged what he might have been. O’Neal had legitimate foot problems for much of his career. I can recall, 15 years ago, O’Neal seated in the locker room at the United Center in Chicago, taking off his shoe and showing me his left little toe, which was crooked and curled under, looking especially painful bec[……]

Dwyane Wade willing to take Heat to the 'bitter end'

TAG

NBA For once, Dwyane Wade has calculated, time is on his side. So he is going to wait. Or, as one source with knowledge of the situation put it, “It looks like he will take this all the way to the bitter end, if that is what the Heat want to do.”Pat Riley’s side of things? He just does not want to suffer the same fate as the Lakers. But he might not have much choice. While most of the free agents around the league have found this summer loaded with schmoozy recruiting pitches and unimagined payouts, Wade has been waiting for Miami to give him the kind of contract he feels he deserves. In the context of a summer in which oft-injured Bradley Beal was given $25 million per year, Wade has felt slighted by the Heat’s focus on Hassan Whiteside and Kevin Durant, and now by their offer of two years, $40 million.MORE: Free agency tracker | Wade meets with Denver Wade wants $50 million, or he wants a third year on the contract. And he knows he’s right. That’s why this game of free-agent chicken — one he has played with the franchise before — has been taking on a much different feel. Wade is angry, and it’s pretty easy to see why.In 2014, when the Heat were surprised by the competition they had to re-sign LeBron James, who eventually left for Cleveland, Wade agreed to opt out of a contract that would have paid him $42 million over two years. That would allow the Heat the space for re-signing Wade, Chris Bosh (who got a max[……]

James Harden surprisingly signs contract extension with Rockets

Nobody understood Tim Duncan quite like The Onion

TAG

NBA Tim Duncan’s public persona has never seemed like a persona at all — 夜网论坛he just is who he is. The guy showed up every night for 20 years and quietly added a pebble to a bucket of career that made him the best power forward of all time.Part of what made him compelling — beyond how special a basketball player he was — was how average he seemed. On plenty of levels, it was like watching your neighbor or social studies teacher or brother-in-law moonlight as one of the best athletes of his era. MORE: Tim Duncan in pictures | Why there will never be anotherAnd really, it’s one of all-time perfect matches of personality and playing style; Duncan played with ruthless, appealing, metronomic efficiency and never acted in a way that suggested he lived out his day-to-day life any differently. These 10 stars are the Basketball Hall of Fame's most egregious snubs

Hall of Fame Class of 2016 ranks high in greatness, even higher in controversy

TAG

NBA SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Despite the speculation led by one member, Shaquille O’Neal, it should be said definitively that, no, basketball’s Hall of Fame Class of 2016 is not 夜网论坛the greatest class ever to enter the hall as a group. It’s among the top five, for sure, but not quite ahead of 1980 (Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas), 1987 (Rick Barry, Pete Maravich, Walt Frazier) and arguably not ahead of some others, too (2006, ’08 and ’09).But what this incoming group has that others were lacking is an unprecedented level of controversy — even disdain and dislike — both in and out of their careers. Much of that has subsided over the years, but consider the travails of O’Neal and his fellow 2016 Hall of Fame headliners, Allen Iverson and Yao Ming. MORE: Meet the Hall of Fame Class of 2016— As much as O’Neal will be remembered for his 15 All-Star selections, his four NBA championships and his three consecutive Finals MVP awards, his spectacular public battles with teammate Kobe Bryant during their tenure together as one of the greatest one-two punches in league history will be forever engrained in his history. Latest odds for Russell Westbrook to win MVP are absurd

TAG

NBA The online sportsbook Bovada released its latest 2016-17 NBA MVP odds this week (all seen below), and has Russell Westbrook as a startling 2-to-1 favorite to win the award. Westbrook will no doubt blow up the stat sheet every night for a team that will probably fit somewhere between the five through eight spots in the West. But history tells us that the explosive point guard could have a hard time bringing home the trophy.A logical reference point for what Westbrook and the Thunder could look like this year is the mostly Durant-less 2014-15 season. Factor in a Serge Ibaka for Victor Oladipo swap (which is a bit of a downgrade based on win shares), a full season of Enes Kanter compared to 50 games less of Reggie Jackson, along with a new coach and an improved Steven Adams, and it’s reasonable to hypothesize the 2016-17 Thunder will have similar success to the 55-game sample without Durant two years ago. And Westbook will undoubtedly try to create an absurd portion of OKC’s offense with Durant gone again, indicated by his 2014-15 usage percentage which was second only to 2005-06 Kobe Bryant for the highest in league history. This will keep his boxscore stats inflated but is likely to hurt efficiency a great deal. Westbrook also missed time that season with a broken hand, but in the 40 games he played in which Durant didn’t, the Thunder went 22-18. That projects to a 45-win season and winning about 55 percent of their gam[……]

Attacks on Kevin Durant joining Warriors range from hollow to hypocritical

NBA When Kevin Durant was 18, technically old enough to meet the NBA’s new age limit but very much a young man in the world of big business, he was instructed where he would report if he wished to begin a career playing professional basketball in the league. He had no real choice in the matter. It didn’t matter if he preferred to be close to his home in the D.C. area or close to where he went to college at Texas. It didn’t matter if he thought a particular coach might be a better personal fit in terms of personality or strategy.
