Budweiser celebrates 'Typical Americans' in Super Bowl commercial, earns praise on social media

  • NFL Chiefs v 49ers 49ers Chiefs American Football

One way to receive near-unanimous approval on a commercial? Target "typical Americans" who like beer.

Budweiser wisely followed that formula with its new Super Bowl ad, which was revealed Thursday morning. It features inspiring individuals such as Ken Nwadike Jr., the founder of the Free Hugs Project, and Hannah Gavios, who finished the 2019 New York City Marathon on crutches three years after suffering a spinal cord injury while fleeing an attacker.

USWNT star Ali Krieger praised the ad on Twitter: "Every time I watch, I get to relive one of the best moments of my life with (her wife and teammate) Ashlyn Harris. Cheers!"

Antonio Brown mocked by fans after reportedly getting another NFL chance

  • NFL Buccaneers American Football

Antonio Brown will likely play in the NFL in 2020 after reportedly agreeing to the framework of a contract with the Buccaneers on Friday.

The wide receiver is suspended through Week 8 because of allegations he attacked a delivery truck driver. He faces separate sexual assault accusations and has long been a controversial locker room figure for his squabbles with teammates and coaches.

Brown's bizarre stint with the Raiders last year involved a hot air balloon, frostbitten feet, cryptic social media videos and zero games played. His time with the Patriots didn't go much better — he played one game before being released amid a sexual misconduct claim.

So NFL fans aren't sure Brown will last long in Tampa Bay. News of his potential signing was met with ridicule on social media, as well as fantasy football commentary and hope from select Buccaneers fans that the high-risk move would pay off.

Rams' Jalen Ramsey makes a mysterious exit from Week 8 with 'illness'

  • NFL Rams Dolphins Dolphins v Rams American Football

Jalen Ramsey started Sunday's game against the Dolphins but the Rams cornerback left the field after a couple of snaps and is questionable to return after feeling sick.

Ramsey wasn't listed on the inju夜网论坛ry report before the game, so the illness came as a surprise.

Ramsey's illness is good news for rookie Tua Tagovailoa, who is making his first NFL start against the Rams.

It didn't take long for the quarterback to take advantage of Ramsey's absence. Tagovailoa threw his first NFL touchdown to DeVante Parker, who was being covered by Ramsey's replacement.

What channel is Steelers vs. Bengals on today? Time, TV schedule for Week 10 NFL game

  • NFL Steelers v Bengals Bengals Steelers American Football

Pittsburgh, the lone unbeaten team in the NFL, faces it next challenge when it hosts Joe Burrow and the Bengals in a divisional rivalry game that can be seen on Fox.

The Steelers (8-0) are undefeated, but just barely so after squeezing out a closer-than-anticipated game over Dallas. In the 24-19 win Ben Roethlisberger missed some time after suffering injuries to both knees. His availability for the Bengals game was already going to be called into question before news broke that the Steelers' quarterback was placed on the reserve COVID-19 list along with three other teammates. His status for the game and how effective his play may be remains uncertain given that Roethlisberger will have to isolate from the team for the entirety of the week.

Cincinnati (2-5-1) isn't going to win the Super Bowl this year, but finally has a solid foundation at quarterback in the rookie Burrow. Before the Bengals' bye week, his 2,274 passing yards in eight games ranked third in the NFL, and he is on pace to surpass Andrew Luck's ro[......]

Patrick Mahomes: I'm not at Tom Brady's level yet

  • NFL American Football Chiefs Buccaneers v Chiefs Buccaneers

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he is not yet at the level of Buccaneers QB and "global star" Tom Brady.

Mahomes and Brady will go head-to-head in a marquee matchup when the reigning Super Bowl champions travel to Tampa to face the Bucs on Sunday.

NFL PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread

Mahomes is arguably the premier quarterback in the league, having led Kansas City to Super Bowl 54 glory, his exploits capped by further MVP honors in the showpiece contest. The 2018 NFL MVP has carried that form into 2020, but he does not believe he compares to six-time Super Bowl champion Brady at the moment.

"He's someone that's a global star,'' Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday. "For me, I just try to be myself and go out there every single day and put in the work and try to win football games. All that other stuff kind of comes with it.

"I just try to be a normal guy and live it up with my teammates and have fun doing it.''

ESPN ran with a fake Adam Schefter tweet about an NFL coach firing

  • NFL American Football

Fake reporter accounts on Twitter have mostly seemed to die down, but they aren't completely dead yet.

A fake Adam Schefter account remarkably fooled ESPN during Black Monday, the day when most NFL head coaches get fired. We say remarkably because 1) ESPN employs Schefter, so it should be easy to see whether the report is accurate and 2) The Twitter account didn't try very hard to disguise itself.

The account changed its Twitter name to Adam Schefter and changed the profile photo. But the account name was @TuaNeedsHelp. Usually when you see a fake account the Twitter handle is changed, giving writers everywhere flashbacks to @AdarnSchefter.

The account, along with the tweet, was later deleted.

Lamar Jackson chasing 'Superman' Cam Newton for most rushing TDs as a quarterback

  • NFL Patriots v Ravens Patriots Ravens American Football

Lamar Jackson may be the gold standard for the NFL's rushing quarterbacks in 2020, but he made sure to give credit to the "O.G." this season.

In this case, the 'original gangster' Jackson is referring to is Cam Newton. The duo faced off for the first time as starters in the NFL on Week 10's "Sunday Night Football" on NBC when the Patriots host the Ravens. Jackson started watching Newton at Auburn and wanted to be like him.

As far as dual-threat quarterbacks go, Newton has set a high bar in the NFL. He's lived up to his "Superman" moniker that Jackson repeated multiple times in Week 10. Newton's the all-time leading rushing TD scorer among quarterbacks in league history, and while Jackson (along with Kyler Murray and Josh Allen) will likely make a run at it, Newton ran for an additional 12 touchdowns in 2020. He's not making catching him on that leaderboard an easy task, but Jackson can't wait to share the field with him.

What channel is Buccaneers vs. Saints on today? Time, TV schedule for NFL divisional playoff game

  • NFL Saints v Buccaneers Saints Buccaneers American Football

The oldest quarterback matchup in playoff history takes place to cap off the 2021 NFL divisional round as Tom Brady takes on Drew Brees.

Brady's Buccaneers travel to New Orleans to face Brees' Saints just two days after Brees turned 42. Brady, at 43, has maintained a high level of play and helped Tampa Bay beat Washington in the wild-card round. The Saints handled the Bears rather easily to advance to the postseason's second weekend.

These squads faced off twice in the regular season, and New Orleans was the convincing winner both times, especially with a 38-3 win on Nov. 8. The Saints caused Brady and the Buccaneers a lot of trouble by pressuring the future Hall of Famer, so pass rush could be crucial for New Orleans on Sunday night.

Baker Mayfield sends strong message to Browns fans calling for Deshaun Watson trade

  • NFL Browns Texans American Football

Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has reportedly requested a trade, so, naturally, many football fans are constructing hypothetical deals and opening up Photoshop to make jersey swaps. It's not every day that a 25-year-old NFL star under contract for multiple seasons suddenly hits the market, after all.

There are obvious potential suitors with big holes at quarterback — Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer broke down the best fits here — but given that Watson is coming off a career year (league-high 4,823 passing yards and 33 touchdowns) with his full prime ahead of him, should a team holding a good QB look to upgrade in the hopes of emerging as a true Super Bowl contender? That's a question already being asked by some folks in Cleveland.

Patrick Mahomes' mother, Randi, may have been wise to put her phone out of reach during Super Bowl 55.

Instead, Randi went viral for the second time in a month for her tweet criticizing the officiating in the Chiefs' 31-9 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday night.

Derrick Rose says he could have played in Bulls preseason game

  • NBA

Because Derrick Rose sat out so much of last year, seeing him on the bench for the Bulls' preseason game against the Wizards was not a welcome sight.

Citing minor knee soreness in his left knee, the Bulls sat Rose the entire night as they defeated the Wizards at HSBC Arena in Rio, even though he dressed for warm-ups and has not setback listed on the team's injury report.

Rose said as much when he spoke to media to explain why he did not participate in one of the NBA's first games in Rio, a sure sign of the league's plans to expand globally.

“I’m good,” Rose said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “I could’ve played, but the front office made the decision to sit me out. I can’t complain about it. It’s nothing huge. I know that I should be able to go next game.”

The Bulls avoided answering questions like this last season because Rose didn't push his surgically-repaired torn ACL in a game, instead sitting out the entire season. While there was a chorus for him to return, Chicago remained steadfast in their support of Rose.

Now, even when he misses a preseason start, questions will fly. And Bulls vice president of basketball operations John Paxson experienced that firsthand.

“We never anticipated a straight line,” Paxson said. “He had a little soreness and we are being ultra-conservative because it’s the third game of preseason. We respect tremendously the fact that we’re in Brazil and what that means and we’d love[......]

Former NBA player Joe C. Meriweather unexpectedly dies at 59

  • NBA

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Former NBA player Joe C. Meriweather, who later coached women's basketball at Park University in Missouri, has died in Columbus, Ga. He was 59.

Park athletic department spokesman Steve Wilson says Meriweather, of Phenix City, Ala., died unexpectedly Sunday, 夜网论坛and cause of death was unknown.

Wilson said Meriweather is the most successful women's basketball coach in Park University history. He led the team to its only NAIA national championship tournament in the 2005-06 season.

The 10-year NBA veteran played for the Houston Rockets, the Atlanta Hawks, the New Orleans Jazz, the New York Knicks and the Kansas City Kings. He also had played in Italy and Spain.

The 6-foot-10 Meriweather was the 11th pick in the 1975 NBA draft out of Southern Illinois and is in its hall of fame.

Following five-game suspension, J.R. Smith to make season debut for Knicks

  • NBA

The New York Knicks will welcome J.R. Smith back from a five-game suspension Sunday when they face the San Antonio Spurs.

Smith, suspended for breaking the NBA's anti-drug policy, will come off the bench and will be limited to 30 minutes, coach Mike Woodson told ESPNNewYork.com.

"We've just got to make sure that mentally he's there," Woodson said. "And I can't burn him physically."

That decision is also based on the fact that Smith is returning from surgery to repair his left patella tendon and a lateral meniscus in his left knee. The minutes limit will help Smith, who is still working to regain explosiveness in his left leg, on which he jumps as a right-handed finisher at the rim.

Smith signed a three-year, $18 million contract. After signing the deal, he had surgery a week later rat夜网论坛her than doing so before securing a deal.

"I can't wait (to return)," Smith said. "I'm anxious more than anything. I just want to do so well for my teammates."

Smith will re-join a 2-3 Knicks team that could use his help. Without him, they've suffered losses to the Charlotte Bobcats, Minnesota Timberwolves and Chicago Bulls.

Their biggest loss, however, came when big man Tyson Chandler fractured a bone in his right left, an injury that will keep him out the next 4-6 weeks. The Knicks have started Andrea Bargnani in his place, as Amare Stoudemire and Kenyon Martin both work their way back from injury.

Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook spoil James Harden's OKC return trip

  • NBA

OKLAHOMA CITY — Russell Westbrook wouldn't say he wanted payback against Patrick Beverley.

    His play said otherwise.

During last year's playoffs, Beverley dived for the ball and ran into Westbrook's right knee as a timeout was being called, causing the injury that ended Westbrook's season and cost him about half of this seaso夜网论坛n. In their first meeting since the incident, Westbrook had 24 points, seven assists and four steals to help the Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the Houston Rockets 106-98 on Tuesday night.

Beverley finished with two points and five fouls in 25 minutes while being booed by a spirited crowd. His matchup with Westbrook highlighted a game filled with shoving, technical fouls, talking and even a flagrant foul.

"Two great teams that want to win: It's that simple," Houston's James Harden, who scored 28 points, said. "When you get that anytime in the NBA, things are going to get physical."

The chippiness started early. Beverley swiped the ball away from Westbrook after a timeout with 6:10 left in the first quarter. Beverley and Westbrook had to be separated, and Beverley issued a technical foul. Beverley and Westbrook got tangled up again about a minute later, but again, Westbrook kept his cool. Durant said Westbrook's ability to turn the energy into a strong performance was impressive.
